As per me if you are starting SEO for new website, you need to have slow link building as well as target long tail keywords and use of social media to have fast results, your views may be different but for new sites, its really hard to compete on main keywords. Once your web site is popular, you can always change keywords, but long tail keywords provide you traffic when your web site is new

I think it is good to concentrate on long tail keywords.

For new start it is good to start with longtail as it get up in rank easily compare to short tail in which requires lot of works as short tails is more competitive.
