301 Redirect is used when you have permanently moved your site from one site to another & we want search engine retain our site ranking...
In other words we can say if we put 301 status code it means a page has permanently moved to a new location.
301 Redirect is used in which situations.
a) When we are going to merge two sites.Suppose our last domain is expired & we want to make sure that the expired domain link is redirect to new domain.
b) when we moved old site to new.
Recommendation when you use 301 redirect
1.First of all redirect section or directory then check is your redirection working properly if yes then move all your contents.
2. Never used single redirection to redirect your all traffic from old domain to new home page by using this definitely you can avoid 404 error but it will not help you to preserve your site ranking. If are not able to do page-to-page redirection then make sure every page of your old site which you want to redirect to new page it should have similar content.
3. If you want to use the Change of Address tool, you need to verify the owner of both new & old sites by Google.
4.After the completion of 301 redirect add your new site to webmaster tools account & verify your ownership of new site.
5.If you want Google will discover your new sites page then submit your Sitemap which shows the listing of new site urls.
After this use webmaster tool to check everything is ok.
